Young Friends experience a gallery talk with artist and FCA Board member Kara Walker

Young Friends of the FCA

The Young Friends of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts is a group of young people who enjoy seeing and supporting contemporary art in a variety of forms—music, dance, theater/performance, poetry and visual arts.

Young Friends of the FCA was started in 2004 as an opportunity for individuals to take advantage of the diversity of artists that FCA supports, while also providing needed financial support. The Young Friends are invited to attend small, private events involving artists who have either supported or been supported by FCA. Past events have included: a dress rehearsal with 2003 Grantee choreographer John Jasperse (who, a few months later, was lauded for his performance at BAM), gallery talks with artists Paul Chan and Kara Walker, a rehearsal with musicians Bang on the Can followed by cocktails with the artists and visits to the studios of artists such as Donald Judd, James Siena and Terry Winters.

The 2011-12 Young Friends season will begin with a cocktail party at the home of long-time Young Friends Erin and Peter Friedland. The Young Friends will enjoy several unique events this season, including a private tour of Artists Space’s Christopher D’Arcangelo exhibition and a day trip to see David Altmejd’s show at The Brant Foundation in Greenwich, CT. Young Friends will also have opportunities to attend additional private studio visits, rehearsals and performances.

Every year the Young Friends are invited to a reception and performance where FCA grantees are announced, which is attended by past grantees and artists who continue to be involved with FCA. Art collectors have the opportunity to view works for sale from FCA’s extensive collection and take advantage of a member discount. Young Friends also receive periodic offers of free tickets to performances at organizations supported by FCA.
