CHARADE

I am currently working on a digitally animated performance, which will premiere at Dance Theatre Workshop in two weeks' time (January 21st & 28th at 2pm). I often build movement using digital software from Credo Interactive Inc., and embody my material only after its formal completion on a computer. This creates a dialectic between real and virtual performances, between the animated and the real, between possible and impossible anatomies. While the digital "double" is a well-established idea in the performing, media, and visual arts, my aim is to create situations in which the human body is visibly expanded by the use of these technologies - that is to say, people witness (im)possible anatomies being performed in real time.

Jonah Bokaer (Ithaca, NY) is a contemporary dance graduate of North Carolina School of the Arts, and is a current member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. While studying Visual & Media Art at The New School University he began exploring choreographic software, and has developed several digitally-created choreographies that address the moving body in relation to contemporary technology. These works have been exhibited widely throughout the United States and abroad, to great critical acclaim. Bokaer is also the founder of "Chez Bushwick Studios," an interdisciplinary arts studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
