2018 Emergency Grants: Visual Arts

Vanessa Albury (Brooklyn, NY), a visual artist, received a grant in September to install her solo show All Things That Are, Are Light and Soot at Quappi Projects in Louisville, KY, September 21-November 4.

Razan AlSalah (Philadelphia, PA), a filmmaker and media artist, received a grant in February to install i am also We at the Ann Arbor Film Festival's Off the Screen exhibition in Ann Arbor, MI, March 20-25.

Anxious to Make (Berkeley, CA), a new media art collaboration, received a grant in November to install Eternal Boy Playground at Telematic Gallery in San Francisco, CA, December 15-February 2.

Colleen Billing (Brooklyn, NY), a visual artist, received a grant in October to install her solo exhibition SISTER GENUS at Bad Water in Knoxville, TN, November 10-December 15.

Jenna Bliss (Brooklyn, NY), a filmmaker, received a grant in March to participate in Multilogues on the Now: On Health, Work and Emotions at Tranzdisplay in Prague, Czech Republic, April 10-12.

Patricia Boyd (New York, NY), a visual artist, received a grant in April to present Good Grammar at Potts in Los Angeles, April 22-June 3.

Jennifer Boysen (Ventura, CA), a visual artist, received a grant in February to present new work at Arturo Bandini in Los Angeles, March 1-June 22.

Neha Choksi (Inglewood, CA), a visual artist, received a grant in April to present Every Kind of Sun in Made in L.A. 2018 at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, June 3-September 2.

Cici Ciriza (Los Angeles, CA), an installation and performance artist, received a grant in June to install Ancestral Reversals at Visitor Welcome Center in Los Angeles, July 1-31.

Bethany Collins (Chicago, IL), a multidisciplinary artist, received a grant in October to install her solo exhibition The Litany at Locust Projects in Miami, November 17-January 26.

Sam Contis (Oakland, CA), a visual artist, received a grant in February to present Deep Springs in the exhibition Being: New Photography 2018 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, March 13-August 19.

Calagno Cullen (Cincinnati, OH), a visual artist, received a grant in May to present What Feed Us at the Molineddu Gallery in Ossi, Italy, July 7-August 4.

Emily Culver (Richmond, VA), a sculptor, received a grant in November to install Labor of Suggestion at School 33 Art Center in Baltimore, MD, December 7-January 28

Paolo Davanzo and Lisa Marr (Los Angeles, CA), filmmakers and educators, received a grant in March to present The Sound We See at Asociación Realizadores Experimentales Audiovisuales in Buenos Aires and Laboratorio Fundación de Arte Contemporáneo in Montevideo, Argentina, April 1-May 15.

Mercedes Dorame (Malibu, CA), a photographer, received a grant in April to present Facing West at San Francisco City Hall in San Francisco, on May 19.

Chitra Ganesh (Brooklyn, NY), a visual artist, received a grant in August to present her solo exhibition Her Garden, A Mirror at The Kitchen in New York, September 12-October 30.

Tourmaline (Reina) Gossett and Sasha Wortzel (Brooklyn, NY), filmmakers, received a grant in August to present Happy Birthday, Marsha! at The Kitchen in New York, September 21-22.

Heather Hart and Jina Valentine (Chicago, IL), visual and social practice artists, received a grant in July to present The Black Lunch Table at A4 Arts in Cape Town, South Africa, July 15-22.

Iris Hu (Pasadena, CA), a visual artist, received a grant in March to install Survival Guide: inheritance at Women's Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles, March 23-April 30.

Adam Khalil (Queens, NY), a filmmaker, received a grant in September to present The Violence of a Civilization Without Secrets and Anti-Ethnography at Human Resources Los Angeles in Los Angeles, with a screening on October 26 and public programming on October 27.

Gelare Khoshgozaran (Los Angeles, CA), a visual and performance artist, received a grant in May to present Medina Wasl: Connecting Town in Made in L.A. 2018 at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, June 3-September 2.

Olga Koumoundouros (Los Angeles, CA), a sculptor, received a grant in February to install WE at Human Resources in Los Angeles, February 11-March 3.

Laida Lertxundi (Los Angeles, CA), a filmmaker, received a grant in April to present Words, Planets at REDCAT in Los Angeles, on May 7.

Yvette Mayorga (Chicago, IL), a visual artist, received a grant in May to install work in Reinterpreting Religion at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art in Chicago, June 1-July 29.

Dylan Mira (Los Angeles, CA), a sculptor and new media artist, received a grant in June to install Night Vision at Actual Size Los Angeles in Los Angeles, July 14-September 8.

Wes Modes (Felton, CA), a visual artist, received a grant in March to present A Secret History of American River People, a touring exhibition with its first showing on March 24.

Alva Mooses (Brooklyn, NY), a visual artist, received a grant in June to install Mira-Mirage at the Luhovaný Vincent Festival in Luhačovice, Czech Republic, June 28-July 1.

Antoni Muntadas (New York, NY), a multidisciplinary installation and media artist, received a grant in July to install Asian Protocols at Three Shadows Photographic Art Center in Beijing, China, August 18-September 16.

Christie Neptune (Brooklyn, NY), a visual and performance artist, received a grant in August to install her solo exhibition Unpacking Sameness at NURTUREart in Brooklyn, September 7-October 7.

Lynx Nguyen (Morrow, GA), a visual artist, received a grant in November to install Daily Discipline at the Chinese American Art Council in New York, December 14-January 11.

Kelly O'Brien (Cleveland, OH), a visual artist, received a grant in April to present Liberty is the freedom to do exactly what you've been doing at the FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art at the Transformer Station in Cleveland, OH, July 14-September 30.

Bruno Pogačnik and Ivana Vukšić (Brooklyn, NY), visual artists, received a grant in July to install What, Where and for Whom at Art-O-Rama in Marseille, France, August 31-September 9.

Yoshie Sakai (Gardena, CA), a video, installation, and performance artist, received a grant in August to present her solo exhibition KOKO's Love: The Technicolor Unfairy Tale Ball at Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento, CA, September 6-October 28.

Melissa Sclafani (Tempe, AZ), a sculptor, video, and performance artist, received a grant in September to install Crowd Control at NURTUREart in Brooklyn, October 19-November 19.

Sean Smuda (San Francisco, CA), a visual, performance, and multimedia artist, received a grant in July to present Universal Capitalism and perform Free Jazz Funeral for Capital at the Kind of Belou Jazz Festival in Treignac and Tarnac, France, August 2-5.

Elizabeth Tubergen (New Haven, CT), a sculptor, received a grant in September to install L'Intrus at Tabakalera in San Sebastian, Spain, October 26-February 3.

Rodrigo Valenzuela (Los Angeles, CA), a multimedia artist, received a grant in June to present Tertiary at The Kitchen in New York, June 27-August 3.

Christina Weisner (Kill Devil Hills, NC), a sculptor and installation artist, received a grant in August to install her sculpture Ocean Bottom Seismometers in the group exhibition Mainframe at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, September 14-October 20.

James Kienitz Wilkins (Brooklyn, NY), a filmmaker, received a grant in June to screen The Plagiarists at the Champs-Élysées Film Festival in Paris, France, June 12-16.

Andrew Wilson (Oakland, CA), a visual artist, received a grant in February to install his solo exhibition Equivalencies: Abandoned Bodies at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, March 28-June 30.

Paula Wilson (Carrizozo, NM), a visual artist, received a grant in September to install her solo exhibition Spread Wild: The Pleasures of the Yucca at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, September 29-November 4.

Carmen Winant (Columbus, OH), a visual artist, received a grant in January to install The Womanly Art of Self Defense at SculptureCenter in Long Island City, January 28-April 2.

Xia Zhang (Gatlinburg, TN), a visual artist, received a grant in February to install Skin on Skin at the Sandra J. Blain Gallery at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN, March 10-May 7.
